At least thirteen people lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
