European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
