Finest TV Selections: Seven Must-Watch Films This Week

Top Selection

This Satirical Thriller

The filmmaker's daring commentary tackles the tyranny of feminine aesthetics along with the feared consequences of ageing. Demi Moore delivers a brilliant acting turn playing Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress reduced to hosting a workout series on television. Pushed out thanks to her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes a mysterious and horrifying process known as "The Substance". This produces a youthful duplicate called Sue, culminating in a steadily more vampiric relationship between them. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This suspenseful thriller stars Knightley in the role of Laura, an ace reporter who decides to take a break from writing about international wars to join an opulent ship accompanied by a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and donor, her partner, plus additional affluent individuals. However when an enigmatic female goes overboard during the evening and the entire crew denies she ever existed, the reporter's sleuthing skills awaken. Out now, Netflix

Presence

The acclaimed director tests his creative boundaries with this nifty ghostly tale shot entirely through the eyes of the spirit. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their recent residence, the camera – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of conscious of the ghostly being, and it seems guarding her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, including a revelation you might not see coming. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

This Self-Referential Film

Cage fully commits to his unique fame via this self-referential adventure. He portrays an egotistical Hollywood actor playing himself who agrees to a lucrative offer to attend a festive event on the Spanish island for the wealthy superfan Javi. Hired by the intelligence agency to spy on the alleged criminal, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. October 11th, 9pm, Channel 4

The Black Phone

The director's claustrophobic thriller remains effective despite the lack of a continuation. Taking place in 1978 Denver, several child abductions has rendered the youth on edge. When Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a dungeon, he fears a fatal end. However, the disconnected phone mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators providing assistance, and the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, on Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the battle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for materialism in this director's brilliantly over-the-top biopic about the fallen televangelist and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye commence capitalizing on the American public's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, though Chastain achieves to present the real-life figure with compassion. October 14th, early morning, on Film4

Black Bag

This week's second offering from the filmmaker delivers a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars worn by Fassbender's UK spy. He is tasked with uncovering a traitor among the team from five suspects – among them is his own wife. Each performer excel of deadpan cool, so a delicious mental battle of truth or lie develops. Additional actors join in the smart espionage amusement. This Friday, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
