Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The former head of state was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.
This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.
His son, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.
The former president is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.
The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and return him to office.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
